Topic 1. Repetition. Use of articles by geographical names
Exercises of this topic Next topic
As you already know, with the names of countries and the city, articles are usually not used.
But, there are exceptions:
cities:
The Hague (The Hague)
Countries (for historical reasons):
The Sudan, The Yemen, The Argentina - these names of countries can be used without the article. Also The Netherlands (Netherlands), as in the name for historical reasons there is a plural.
The Philippines (in fact, this is the name of a group of islands)
Countries in the name of which there are such terms as the States, the Republic, the Federation, the Kingdom... that is not their own names: The United States of America, The United Kingdom, The Russian Federation. With the abbreviations of these names, the definite article is also used: The USSR.
Note
A definite and indefinite article can be used with the names of cities and countries, but only if there is a specific context.
It was the Paris of my youth. It was (that same) Paris of my youth.
"Of my youth" is the context necessary for the use of a particular article.
When he returned twenty years later, he found a new America. - When he returned 20 years later, he discovered (some) a new America.
